We knew it was coming we just didn't know when...race after race...meet after meet...Riggs had been solid...steadily improving...but sometimes you just don't have it...don't feel it...and today was that day for Riggs. He was happy and excited but very nervous...way more tense than usual at the starting line
And then the pent up emotion was released as the gun fired, signaling the start of the race...but it was a false start and they all had to go back and start all over again.
When I saw him for the first time in the race he was way behind where he usually is.....When I saw him coming up the hill at the finish line he was white faced, struggling, and behind Brandon who he is usually way in front of.....
He crossed the finish line and the tears started to fall.....
He did not talk to anyone for about a half hour and stood alone in his misery....when I walked close to him to talk...try to comfort him...he walked away.....Coach talked to him...told him he ran a good race and that it was just a race...let it go, Riggs...
We ran this race without our top two boys so I think the pressure was great...and the expectations were low. But when the results were posted we were delighted! The Goshen boys has come in second place to Hite with their sixth grade giants and Riggs Hardy set a PR...a new record for himself...so his "bad" race was actually amazing, just like him. The clouds lifted and the smiles returned and the day was good!
