Derby City Qualifications

We officially introduced Rollins to Derby City Running Club! We suited him up in the orange and blue for his qualification race to go compete nationally in Orlando! I wasn't sure how he would race, but he sure was precious!

It was super Windy.....so we knew that would be a factor...probably no PR's today but we were there to make the most of it!
Rollins was ready at the start line!
and when that gun went off....that little 7 year old took off like a bullet!

I watched until he disappeared and he was trying so hard!
Riggs was watching intently as his brother raced....he has been so supportive of Rollins this first year and I am so proud of him for that.

It wasn't long until we saw him come out off the woods!
He was in second in an 8 and under race!
He zoomed into the finish line and you know what he beat the wind and got a PR today! Yhea for Rollins!
Now it was Riggs' turn....
Riggs puts a lot of pressure on himself....and especially how he runs against the precious child to his left....Wes Grogan. They both want to beat each other...and throughout the season they have both won races when they have gone head to head. Who would it be today?! I love it that they are on the same team now... it's good for them!
They were both ready for sure!
and they were off!!!!

They both had good starts...Riggs really did! Usually Wes beats Riggs off the line. He is a year older and is just stronger and has those muscles to get him to that next gear...
As they headed into the trees they were neck and neck and I sent some happy thought into the sky for Riggs...I know this race meant a lot to him....
Riggs got a tiny cramp..but Wes took that opportunity to jump ahead in a BIG way.....

Now it was time for little brother to cheer for Riggs and cheer he did! He ran from spot to spot to cheer him on!
It was done pretty much...Wes and Ethan were clearly ahead of Riggs...and time was running out...
Riggs felt it too...the pressure.....the disappointment....as he headed up this tiny hill I saw the tears in his eyes...and the defeat in his face. Now I am a pretty sweet Moma.....but this face...sent me into full on crazy! Don't you give up, Riggs....I yelled.....don't you spend one second crying....this is a 3k....your race.....don't you ever quit until you get to that finish line..
He glanced over....and his face changed....he had heard me....with his ears and with his heart..
He sped up and we watched and waited....

Coming into the finish line it was Wes...so far ahead....then Ethan...and no Riggs in sight...
and then there he was.....trying so hard....and getting closer with every step....

Close him Riggs I yelled out....close him...that was my way of telling him if he gave 190 percent he could possibly beat Ethan....

and he gave 200%
It would be close....
but he did it...he passed Ethan to come in second...and he was only 10 seconds behind Wes....The heart is an amazing muscle!!!! I am so proud of him for getting back in the race and not giving up! I am also proud of him for coming across that finish line and going right to Ethan and Wes to give them a five and tell them that they had a great race.   Riggs also got a PR today!
We watched and cheered on Avery, Nicole and Trenton and all the other Derby City runners....
Riggs and Rollins loving every second of it...just being there and being part of the team!
